Additions and improvements for Paid Feature

  • Nov. 12th, 2009 at 2:11 PM
We've made some additions and improvements to Notes!

The Notes feature has been added to two action-taking pages:
  • You can now add a Note directly on the Add a friend page - handy if you'd like to mark down where you met them or another name you know them by!
  • On the Ban and unban users page (under Account -> Privacy) you can now add a Note, including to a group of users all banned at the same time (so that next year you won't need to ask yourself "hey, why did I ban these guys?")

Other changes:
  • When you're viewing your existing Notes they're grayed out; click in a field to activate it to change the text (this page can be found from the header by using Profile -> Manage Notes)
  • Changes to editing:
    • When you're going to create a new Note but one already exists, you'll get a warning that you're editing an existing Note
    • You can now delete a note from the "Edit note" pop-up in the hover menu
    • You can now delete notes for multiple selected users on the Manage notes page
    • When you change Notes on "Ban|unban users" page, they can be edited and saved with "Save Changes" button

Republicans hate Muppets!

  • Nov. 12th, 2009 at 1:54 PM
9:41 AM 11/12/09 · I originally thought I'd have to track down a link to the article but it wasn't that big a deal as it was covered in the following video...

...but if you hadn't heard, sometime last week on Sesame Street Oscar the Grouch said something about POX News, which is the muppet version of FOX News, that has made the Republican Party declare that show to be subversive. They actually made an attempt, might still be trying, to have it sanctioned and/or banned.

Link anyways:

Follow the White Rabbit

  • Nov. 12th, 2009 at 1:46 PM
9:58 AM 11/12/09 · One of the lessons I learned in my early teens was that all of the nursery rhymes I heard as a kid, most notably those of the Brothers Grimm, both didn't have the happy endings I had previously learned and were much darker than what I'd been presented with...

...and I think probably more than just about anyone else, Tim Burton's warped little brainpan is just about perfect for portraying these things much more accurately than most.

9:40 PM 11/11/09 · Over the weekend Mom was getting eyestrain skimming sites for a good thing to buy her grandchild, my niece, Peanut. I didn't have any real suggestions, my shopping technique is based less on looking and just letting gifts sneak up on me...

...which may sound ridiculous but it's served me well over the years.

So, the other day I pop onto the TV Guide Channel and spotted this commercial that made me want to call her about it. We had a long chat about it, details of what it was and all that, after I had her copy down the website for it.

She kept hearing it singular and I insisted she get it right because the name was suggestive enough I was worried if she got it wrong that it might lead to a porn site. We both laughed at that.

Slight delay for the next few days

  • Nov. 12th, 2009 at 12:45 PM
Hello [info]pearlswine denizens!

Wanted to apologize for the absence of comics over the last couple of days, and let you know that there will be a slight delay for comics over the next few days.

It's kind of a funny story, really. I'm doing NaNoWriMo -- the National Novel Writing Month. Sadly, the other night, when I was at a write-in--an event held at different locations where NaNo writers get together and write like fiends for a couple of hours a night. Unfortunately, Tuesday night, one of my fellow writers came back to our table with a large caramel latte. I had my back turned, but heard a gasp escape from my writing partner. I turned to my computer, only to see my little iBook covered in large caramel latte!

We immediately cleaned the computer and I pulled the power and the battery, and I left it overnight to dry, after getting all the coffee out from underneath the keyboard. I hoped (and prayed, in my secular way, to the universe) that all would be well.

Sadly, I turned on my computer last night, and there are problems. My keyboard is dead, and I don't know about anything else. So at the moment, my only Internet access is at work--where I am often busy, um, working. I should still be able to get the comic up, it just might be delayed a little while until I get my home computer issues resolved.

Thanks for your patience, and for your awesome comments! I always enjoy posting the comic and seeing your entertaining posts.

Jim
Here is how it would go:

I make a post in the morning.
We can dress up in stacks and bell bottoms, club gear, or work clothers or PJs.
We can post pics or not.
We can link songs.
We can chat with each other.
We can find some grub and talk about the weekend ahead.

What do you think?

People are going to have different views on things. That's part of what makes them different people.

Another part is that they have different bodies. In some cases they live in different places. (Although I'm not sure that I believe in that. "Foreigners". Yeah right!)

I think the secret is to remember that what might be right for you, might not be right for Conrad Bain.

Whatcha you talkin' about today?

The parade was pretty cool yesterday. It wasnt really crowded, I guess because a lot of people have to work on Veterans Day. Im fortunate my boss lets me go do stuff when I need to. I took Daddy. He was so proud standing there watching his fellow vets pass by. Some would salute him and some would wave. I shared pics on facebook. Hopefully the link will work.

Has anyone misjudged you recently, and if so, how?

Well, nobody really, at least, not that I know of...

One will stay. One will leave. You will decide.
Good luck to both of you.

The street sounds to the soldiers' tread,
And out we troop to see:
A single redcoat turns his head,
He turns and looks at me.

My man, from sky to sky's so far,
    We never crossed before;
Such leagues apart the world's ends are,
    We're like to meet no more;

What thoughts at heart have you and I
    We cannot stop to tell;
But dead or living, drunk or dry,
    Soldier, I wish you well.

-- A. E. Housman
On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice.

Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials.

We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait!

As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work.

Anyone up for desk lunching today?

  • Nov. 11th, 2009 at 11:05 AM
Happy Veterans Day

Ours in Greensboro and Winston-Salem, NC is windy and rainy. It is the perfect day for some chili. I remembered the can opener today!

How is your Wednesday going? What's for lunch? Did you get the day off? If you are doing NanoWrimo or the Twitter Nano, how is that going?
