Scientology Charged With Slavery, Human Trafficking [Dec. 1st, 2009|09:29 pm]
slashdotorg
eldavojohn writes "A formal complaint was filed in California (caged PDF) last week by John Lindstein naming David Miscavige and the Church of Scientology International as defendants. Lindstein claims that for sixteen years (from age 8) he was forced to work as a slave at Gold Base, a secret CoS site run by Golden Era Productions with 'razor wire, security guard patrols, surveillance posts, and three roll calls each day.' The pay was $50 a week. The allegations include 'Violations of wage and hour laws as well as unfair/illegal business practices actionable under California B&P 17200 Et. Seq.' and a complaint under the 13th Amendment of the US Constitution, which abolished slavery. Members of the group Anonymous praised the summons."

Seanan McGuire is a few steps ahead of me this month. It is time for some holiday shopping for those that do it. To those that are doing such, please make with the clickie and consider some books. Consider buying books even if you don't make with the clickie. Might I also add that zine subscriptions are a nice gift idea this time of year.

I will be doing a Pre-Roll Call post tomorrow. Please come to the screen/keyboard with some suggestions. Tell us about your books/stories/zines/art/whatever else. If you don't have any, please suggest someone else's. I will make four official pimpage roll call posts this month starting this Friday.

11:11 AM 12/1/09 · Still getting the hang of text messaging my journal. Being limited to 160 characters, some of which is taken up by the subject line, for livejournal is not easy...

...made more tricky when you're suffering from a touch of oxygen deprivation.

Coupled with the fact I sent those 5 or so posts roundabout 5am, I'm not too surprised no comments came back to my phone. Also, it could be just because I finally managed to make sure they didn't, as I was trying to do shortly after setting the service up, as TxtLJ offers a limited number of replies. Maybe I finally got it to direct replies to my email.

Or maybe nobody cares.

What I think brought it on was my birthday cake. Not so much in and of itself as the fact that, between us, Mom and I killed the entire thing in less than 2 days. Usually we manage to stretch the thing out for at least a week but we just lost all control. The reason that recipe is so highly prized, if it can be mastered, is that it produces something that is easily too delicious for words. Taken in moderation it does wonders for the body...

...but, as they say, too much of anything isn't good for you.

Except maybe sex. I still don't think there can be too much of that.

I was having a particularly good dream too, though I'm fuzzy on the details now, when I felt the bile rising and became aware that I couldn't breathe anymore. I shot out of that dream and out of bed, the bunk bed above me and my head were never meant to hit each other like that, damned fast. As stated, this wasn't as bad as previous times as I got thru it much faster than before but still, not a recommended manner of waking.

Feeling much better now. Guess I needed to get that out of me but I'd much prefer it happen when I'm awake. Well, I don't like puking at all...which may or may not explain why in the last decade, other than instances like this, I haven't.

1:09 PM 12/1/2009 · Hmmm, well someone not only cares but it turns out I haven't worked around that comment problem yet. Or how to reply back without making a new post. Still, worth a smile for the 1st part.

I came in early today and need to every day this week. Im swamped! My desk looks like a tornado and what am I doing but checking my LJ. LOL Its time for Christmas cards for here and his Florida office. Im working on profit sharing account stuff. End of year stuff, end of month stuff. Planning our office Christmas party, getting gifts for referring docs. Getting gifts for Doc to mail and then mailing them to his family. And on and on. I know I do too much for him but im damn lucky to have him. Hes good to me in lots of ways too.

Last night we had to go to Walmart for art supplies. Jonathan had a project due today for school. He had to do a monogram. He had a month to do it. So why was he cramming last night to get it done? I will never know. I have adopted a new mantra at my house. I dont care if the laundry grows legs and walks Im not picking up his dirty clothes in the floor. I wont beg him to hang his coat or to pick up his ink pens and 523599 pieces of trash and junk so Izzy doesnt devour them. Im less stressed because of it. I can always close his door. Okay so last night his room is a frickin mess. Bryan goes in there and tells him to decide whats dirty and clean his room. I kinda chuckled inside. Let him stress over it. :)

Oh yeah.. this is the menu ive picked out for our office party,

bacon wrapped scallops
shrimp with cocktail sauce
texas caviar with chips

fried green tomato salad

shrimp and grits
petite filet mignons
roasted potatoes
grilled veggies

rolls
chocolate pie and coconut cake

The best part is OPEN BAR. LOL
Hope they like it. Here is the place http://www.classiconnoble.com/about.php

Green Room - Week 6 - Day 2

Good morning.

Have you turned in your entry for this week yet? Did you notice that the topic was up at all or are you still in a turkey induced coma? Are you in a turkey induced comma? A turkey induced semicolon? A turkey induced colonoscopy?

Whatever the case, get out of your slumber and stumble over to
http://community.livejournal.com/therealljidol/275605.html to turn in your entry and/or check out some of the ones already submitted!

So what's going on in your neck of the woods?

There's an interview with some guy over at www.ljidol.info about Season 6 if anyone is interested.

Hmmm, this might've been better suited to my sex journal.

*cough*

Yeah well Ive just been having all sorts of head desking good fun despite having sworn myself off X11.

I installed Fink with Fink Commander on top to make it a bit less weird and retro. That was painless. Then I went and got a binary of XMMS - taking the sensible advice that teh n00b shouldnt be damn fool enough to try compiling from source first go. That too was fine.

I'd done a bit of checking and made sure I got the Esound and the right output plugin as well. Done.

I'm not hearing any death metal. My walls arent rattling and my neighbours arent banging on my door.

Apparently theres an issue with ESD running as root in OS X when it shouldnt. The daemon blips cheerfully at me when it starts but there's a deadly silence and a rude status popup when I hit play in XMMS. I pissfarted about with it repeatedly. The best advice I could find was something vaguely idiot/savant/zen along the lines of " I tried for weeks, gave up then tried again and it WORKED "

*SIGH*

I was so looking forward to using that Winamp interface again. It's been ages. Oh well there was a certain nostalgia in making OS X shit itself such that I've rebooted three times in the last hour when I dont normally do such a thing for days on end. No kernel panics thank fuck - that wouldve meant abject terror after the drawn out performance my poor MDD put on as its logic board was expiring...

Oh well - back to the iProduct before I beat myself to death with my keyboard...

So I'm having another go playing with GNU Emacs. Other than a bit of curious fiddling I have no experience of such things and certainly no qualifications so any sniping about choice of editors goes straight over my head.

*whoosh*

I'm just unoccupied. I'm definitely not motivated enough to borrow a fuck tonne of cash to go and do some platinum plated IT course.

With all those lovely help files the thing will keep me occupied for awhile anyway. Lately Ive made up my mind to use my computer as something more interesting than a glorified DVD player. I've even been rediscovering the ancient joys of telnet and ftp - and I was surprised to find there are still a few BBSes online.

Reading the EFF's "Big Dummies Guide To The Internet" from 1993/94 and poking around some of the more venerable bits and pieces tucked out of sight in the Mac's Unix made for a few happy hyperfocussed hours yesterday...

"As a net is made up of a series of ties, so everything in
this world is connected by a series of ties. If anyone thinks
that the mesh of a net is an independent, isolated thing, he is
mistaken. It is called a net because it is made up of a series
of interconnected meshes, and each mesh has its place and
responsibility in relation to other meshes."
